In his career, David Bailis has played guitar in a wide variety of settings, from funk to hip hop. His own projects showcase his playing and compositions in jazz groups where he is best able to stretch out and display his appealing musical personality.
On Tree Of Life, Bailis is joined by the masterful tenor-saxophonist Chris Speed, Eric Lane on piano and synth bass, and drummer Jason Nazary. The quartet recorded the full set in a five-hour session without any prior rehearsals. The guitarist says of the music, “The compositions are thematically based on awakening, the eternal, connecting with our roots of humanity, and an overall concept of simplicity.”
The set begins with some quiet piano from Lane on “Rays Of Light,” a performance that soon has Bailis stating the warm melody and gradually building up his solo to a passionate level. Speed has a spot and drummer Nazary is pretty active by the last part of the piece.
“Tree Of Life” is a joyful ensemble piece. “Big Dreams” has some of the most adventurous tenor and guitar solos of the session along with some heated drum breaks. Bobby Caldwell’s ballad “Open Your Eyes” is performed as a solo guitar showcase with Bailis displaying his unique sound and fresh ideas. Tree Of Life concludes with “Is Eternal,” an atmospheric work that has some subtle and catchy rhythms.
David Bailis is originally from Boston and today lives in Brooklyn. He graduated from the Berklee College Of Music in 2004. In his wide ranging career he was a member of the electro funk band Pimps Of Joytime and has worked with John Forte, Philip Glass and Sierra Leone’s hiphop star Bajah & the Dry Eye Crew among many others. He also leads his own group which was featured on the Ropeadope release Firebrand and 3D DB3.
A marathoner and triathlete, David Bailis (who also coaches other athletes) has won many awards and medals for his running. Since 2017 his ideas have been featured on Tourganic, his blog and podcast that focuses on the challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while on the road.
When he is not traveling or working as an educator, David Bailis can be heard performing his lively music in New York clubs including Umbria and the Fiction Bar. Tree Of Life features the guitarist at his best.
